The 2012 Open Championship - Official Thread

its nice to have a real name win a major

I agree. Golf needs it, cause if Tiger and Phil ain't around these days, ain't too many folks watching. Bubba and Rory could emerge as those types of stars but "could" is the operative word.

Ernie's 4 majors ties him with Phil. I think something like only 18 players in history have won as many.

Both are dwarfed in their time by Tiger's shadow and for the most part they were unable to be a true disruptive rival to Tiger as say Trevino, Player and Watson were to Jack. But they did rise above some of the bigger name rivals of Jack's era like Weiskoff and Miller and have carved out a nice legacy.

This win is absolutely huge for Ernie's legacy, and I can't even imagine how much it means to him. Hats off to the Big Easy.

nice for Phil, Ernie, and almost there for Vijay

I was curious so I went back and looked up how many majors the older stars (esp from 60s-80s) had won

Jack Nicklaus - 18
Gary Player - 9
Tom Watson - 8
Arnold Palmer - 7
Lee Trevino - 6
