Drove down with the family today for a week long stay. Didn't get settled in in time to use the boat so I hit the surf with my father in law.

Put together a nice little mess of 30 trout between the 2 of us fishing from 6:00-7:30 till the blue fish moved in. All fish caught on my favorite bait. Pink/ Chartreuse mirrodine. Nice overcast weather. They wouldn't hit soft plastics or topwater. Also bumped into a couple other fisherman throwing live bait and other stuff who didn't have anything.

Bump for update

Father in law was down this morning and didn't do well in the surf either in the AM so don't feel bad.

Thanks for the report. Don't expect exact location but would you please share general area fished and where were the fish located off the beach. I havn't ever had great success surf fishing except last time i surf fished when I decided to make a cast back toward the beach and caught a few in very shallow water just off the beach. I am wondering if I have been walking past the fish.

No specific location really. The surf out front of our camp. Walked through the first trough into water onto the first sand bar (about waist deep). all fish were caught out towards the gulf or casting parallel with the beach.

Just keep walking until you find the fish. Alternate your casts from towards the beach to straight in front of you (parallel with the beach) and out towards the gulf. We had to walk a ways till we found em.

Another suggestion I've had good luck with is using the tide to your advantage if your near the rocks/barges. The tide coming in tends to isolate fish on the ends of the rocks/barges. Cast beyond the end and work back past it...pretty close to the structure, but not too close unless you like buying hooks/lures.

If I go out in the morning, I never step in the water until I've thoroughly checked the area between the beach and the first bar. Then I walk to the first bar, and thoroughly check the trough between it and the second bar. Only after that will I wade on out to the second bar. I've caught some of my better trout before my feet were wet...especially on the fly rod.

Youngest son and I fished Elmer's Island Saturday morning, early. Sun was not even up and first three trout caught with dry feet. Ended up with 37 trout, 14 to 21 inches, 7 rat reds, lady fish for fun and one Atlantic Sharpnose shark. The shark was first time to clean and steak. Live bait was almost not existent, but live cocahoes worked. Did have some luck with Gulp shrimp, new penny & glow.

Damn I suck at this saltwater stuff. I was running a little late, hit Elmer's Island at 6 and caught 3 lady fish and a small pompano from then til 9. Then moved to state park and caught a single rat red. Left at 1.

ETA all on live cocahoes. Tried top water and gulp shrimp with no luck

Brought the wife and kids in the boat this morning. We caught some fish but 70% of the time I spent unfricking something.

Kids were ready to come in at 10:00 had 16 keepers and lot of throwbacks.

Hit the surf in the evening with my father in law and brother in law. I picked up 5 before having a colossal reel and line failure forcing me to come in. In laws finished with 33 in the surf between the 2 of them.

Turns out my Academy actually has these. They also have other models from that company. I'm guessing the mirrodine would be your rec if i only buy one hard bait for trout?

That's what we have caught all our trout in the surf with. Caught some on topwater and under corks while in the boat as well as the mirrodine.

When we hit a feeding school it really didn't matter what we were throwing. But in the surf we had to work for them and were picking them up 1 here and there. They wouldn't touch soft plastics and the one guy we talked to with live bait was catching only trash fish.

Fished Elmer's sunday morning, only a few here and there. Stopped by the rocks in front of the water towers on the way in. Caught some nice specks on the gulf side of the rocks with croakers on a carolina rig. Blue fish ruled the beach side of the rocks.

Surf was rough today. Hit the bay behind the island for slim pickings. Hopefully it will lay down tomorrow.

Much calmer comditions today. Experimental offshore trip. Caught a shark and some trash fish. Not much else.

Fished the surf from 5:30-7:30 in the evening. Picked up 34 trout between 3 of us fishing.

Will try offshore again tomorrow as long as conditions allow.
