I'm thinking about getting tickets. Any suggestions on 11 am or 7pm sessions, where to sit, is it worth it, etc

You can probably buy them off the internet somewhere.

well i'm moving to NY in mid August, so I'ma be around for the whole thing. ideally, i'd go the first or second day, since those two days are before my classes start. but I could also go one of the weekends.

Get tickets for the early round day sessions.
You can just walk around the outer courts and watch guys up close for X amt of days.

Don't waste your money buying Ashe tickets. We bought grounds passes and got to see plenty of good matches in Armstrong/Grandstand. Plus, it's general admission.
The best time to go would be Labor Day weekend. It's a lot of fun.

The morning vs. evening sessions only apply to access into Arthur Ashe stadium. So what they do is they'll have two maybe three matches in Ashe in the morning session, and then they'll shuffle everybody out of the stadium, and it requires an evening session pass to get back in once they start letting people back in.
In the above picture, start your eyes at the top and move them down until you see the first entrance. That is the upper level corridor where you can get beer and food and such. Now move your eyes down to the court and move them up until you see the first entrance. That is the lower level corridor. Unless you have super sweet tickets, it is very very likely that your seats are going to accessed from that upper level corridor.
So my suggestion, if you have a mischievous streak in you,* is to get a ticket for the morning session, and then when they start shuffling everybody out -- or actually probably a few minutes before -- walk down to that lower corridor. You should be able to get down there without a problem. They don't check your ticket until you try to walk up to the entrance from that corridor level. And once you get down there, you will see at least one (there is probably more than one) little mini sit down eateries where you can watch matches on a big tv and buy overpriced drinks and food and chill.
Go there, and hang out for the hour or so until they start letting people back in for the evening session. Order a drink or two so that it isn't too too obvious that you're hiding out to avoid re-entry. Act like you know what you're doing. Nobody will say a word. Boom -- you just saved yourself like 70 bucks.
Also of note: I think the best place to watch a match in the entire tennis center is grandstand court. Grandstand court and Louis Armstrong court are connected, and on the grandstand side of Louis Armstrong there is a walkway, and it gives you an amazing view of grandstand court and a place to watch two matches at once. You could also just grab a seat at grandstand court. It is really small. It's like nobody knows about it. If you see a good match being played there, I would recommend checking it out. Here is a pic:
*I do. I snuck into the player's lounge when I was 17. Pulled up a a chair and sat next to where Anna Kournikova was sprawled out half naked on a couch. True story.

Another poster mentioned that you could just buy grounds tickets and go on the first day or two of the tourney.
That's certainly one way to go. But last time I went I was on a mission to see both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer play tennis in person. So just buying a grounds ticket wasn't an option.
