I just had time to update this so I thought some might be interested.
In the file linked you can see that from plot 17 on, we stayed right at the edge of the water instead of in the normal "faster water" in the channel. That was done to avoid the head-wind issues. The plots are 10 minutes apart so we did not cross land as it looks like, that's just the straight line between the plots.
