Yep. It acts as a strainer and picks up the wort below the mesh and brings it up to the ball valve.

e false bottom sits a couple inches above the spigot on the bottom of the cooler. I thought that the water seeps through the grains, leaving the grain bed on top, and filters out the water. Why do i need to connect a tube from the false bottom to the ball valve? Is the false bottom not perferated? I guess this question is more on how the false bottom works. I'm looking at this picture and it looks like the false bottom sits below the opening of the cooler.
Wort drains through the perforations in the false bottom and is pulled back through a "valve" in teh middle of the screen which is directed towards the ball valve. The false bottom does not connect directly to the ball valve, so you need that small piece of tubing to connect the two.

Has anyone been to Marcello's recently? I'm wondering if i can buy this equipment there or if i'll have to order it.
I may go to lowe's home depot and buy the parts if they have a false bottom at marcello's.

You aren't going to find ball valves that you need at lowes or homedepot. Marcello's may but probably not. Brewstock or Main Grain would be the closest.

I doubt you can get everything you need at Marcello's.
Amazon seemed to have tuns of them though.

hmmm...i'll take a look.
I've read, though, that some valves don't fit with some coolers. So i'm wondering which cooler goes with which valve. They've got rubbermaid, igloo, and home depot brand.

I bought my ball valve at Lowes. As well as most of the rest of the parts EXCEPT for the cooler which was at Home Depot. If you're following the HBT parts list, the SS washers are the toughest part to find. I suggest checking at ACE/Stein.

I tried pricing out the a system, by piece, on amazon.
Looks like austin homebrew's system is cheaper overall. I may just get that. Just hate to spend $188 on the whole kit. (the kit has all the hookups for the mash tun and sparge tank.

What are you buying that 188 is cheaper than amazon? Northern brewer has a false bottom for 40 and a wellness cooler ball valve kit for 40. Outside of tubing that's all you need.

Sparge arm
Two 3-piece stainless steel ball valves
Three 1/2" NPT to 3/8" barb stainless steel nipples

7 feet of 3/8" thermoplastic tubbing (for sparging and run off)
6 inches of 3/8" high temperature tubing (to connect the false bottom to the 3 piece ball valve in the mash tun)
All necessary nipples, nuts, washers, and silicone o-rings

$188 is a lot for a cooler type mash tun. Mine has a SS braid, but I still spent less than $100 all together.
Birdman Brewing has a fully assembled on on sale now for about $165 with a SS false bottom (igloo cooler)
Polar Ware Mash Tun

Well it includes a setup for a sparge tank too. Which i'm doing, also includes sparge arms. Cooler's aren't included.
