The idea was that Shane had never intended to kill Rick at all, but had brought Rick out into the woods to kill him. This is the theory I've had all along. Shane wanted Rick to do what was right and never intended on killing Rick to begin with.

If you go back and watch the first season, Shane wasn't a bad guy. Other than the scene where he held the scope on Rick in the woods (and I guess the scene when he drunkenly tried bang Lori again), there was no indication of Shane being a bad guy until he killed Otis.

As he sincerely said to Rick in season 2, he was confused because the world had gone mad. He did what was right by taking in his best friend's family and mistakenly fell in love in the process. And Lori is the reason that dude snapped. He truly thought Rick was dead and when he showed up for the first time in season 1, Lori completely turned on Shane and that played a huge role in Shane's sudden transformation.
