I just saw a couple of birds soaring above my house that appeared to be some type of raptor...they had narrow swept back wings, triangular tail and were a dark colored bird with what appeared to be a lighter head....
any idea what this was?...

smaller than a normal red-tailed hawk, but had long wings relative to its body size...tail was not v shaped, so I would say the swallow tail kite is not it...
my guess would be either the osprey or mississippi kite as alx suggested...
ETA: I do live on a lake here in MS, so that may add a clue....

Do you live near the coast? Osprey is a coastal bird.

no, I live in Madison....
I think Alx has it correct....it looked a lot like the picture...assume that is a mississippi kite?.....

We have plenty of ospreys and are not near the coast. They do fine on freshwater lakes.

My sister lives in Madison. I see kites every time I go there.

I've never seen them away from the coast, but I believe you.
That said, I don't like to venture too far from the coast...
