I think they would have jumped Texas because of the SEC which all know by now is the best conference there is, but you do have a point sayin the SEC didn't have the clout back then that it does now.

VY and Reggie Bush were possibly the two most hyped college players in recent history. The media wasn't going to forego a title game featuring those two, certainly not in favor of LSU. Add to that, Texas won its conference championship game 70-3.
