Latest Van Halen--any fans?

I've been a giant Halen fan for most of my life, from about age 10.
Very skeptical of the latest Halen: A Different Kind of Truth, especially after the first single Tattoo was less than impressive.
But since it was released, I listen to it every week or so and it's not bad. Has some very good moments like You and Your Blues, Chinatown, As Is......and some not so great. But not bad with the band being defunct for so long.
I'll never understand Van Halen really though....like why don't they have any live DVD's, live albums?.....they could make a killing.
I guess it's because Ed is the ring leader and he's not very dependable.
We saw them with Dave in 07 in NOLA so I'm not going to this tour.

I have the new one, and "tatoo" is definitely my least favorite song.
The whole album is musically, good if not great.
Eddie sounds fantastic.
There's just something...missing. Can't quiteput my finger on it. Best way to describe it is that there's no catchy hooks or anything memorable.

Michael Anthony. Seriously, his harmonies are vital and the band really misses him.

I agree.....I didn't know I agreed till you said it though. There is something missing. Not sure if it's Mike's backing vocals, Ed's guitar tone....not sure.
Eds playing is the best its been in a while but you're right, something isn't there.

Michael's harmonies are definitely missing...but the songs themselves, they aren't catchy at all.
And DLR's voice is lacking. He really can't hit those notes anymore.
But they 'sound' great. Maybe we can hope that this is just the start and better ones are to come.
I am sure its not easy to be that same band after all these years.

huge EVH fan. This is by far the best Ed has played in a long lomg time. I miss mikey , but really this tour would not happen if mike was in teh band. I think Dave is singing good right now, they paly a date and have a night off or two.

Roth's never had a great voice, though he is a great frontman. I feel like I've grown out of Van Halen, though I still love their first two albums. But the new one sounds like them trying to recapture the old sound and at least doing a credible job of it. They certainly aren't sullying the legacy... that would be Van Halen III.

quote:imo, the new release is the typical van halen record. a few very good songs scattered through and album full of filler material.

aside from vh i, ii, & 5150, this has been the recipe for every album.

i wanna say the same thing...back in the late 70's- early 80's they may have been one of the best bands around...Now, i don't know if i would buy a ticket.
I may be one of the few who actually liked van-hagar. I was already a hagar fan and just watching them on stage it just looked like everyone was having a good time....not just dave.

I liked Van Hagar as well. I was once as big a VH fan as any person around.
I have every VH album through VHIII, and saw them four times from 1981-87.
It was easy to deal with them w/o DLR, but not without Michael Anthony. I think I'll just remember them as they were.
I blame EVH for everything.

same here. first i thought it was dave, then i thought it was sammy, then dave , then sammy, then gary....then. common denominator = EVH.
