The one thing I never hunt each year is turkey. I just never got in the mood to do so. I usually flip the cannel if the TV shows are turkey hunting. I guess it is the warm weather.
I may however give it a try next year. I am in a new hunting lease in MS and I am told there are some turkeys. The guys planted for turkeys and were going to turkey hunt, but I do no think any had the time to hunt. I think next year I will give it a try. I hunt just about everything else but never went after the ole turkey.
Any tips tricks? All I have is my trusty 870 wingmaster. No fancy turkey blaster but all I have as shotguns go. I may borrow if needed to see if it is something I would like to do.
What's the ole secret?

Get some turkey load shells & put you up a turkey head target at 30 yards. If you can put 5 or 6 shot in the head your shotgun is good to go.

You will need:
• turkey shot
• turkey choke
• a few different calls
• full camo, head to toe
• luck
• patience

do any of yall check to see where they are roosting so you know where to setup in the am?
Do you just look or blow noisy calls to hear them gobble to know where they are? Does this work? All I know is what I watch on hunting shows and we all know how easy they make it look.

I would like to try it as well...I have never seen as many turkeys as I have since I moved to MS...about a month ago, I was driving from Meridian to Kosciusko one morning about 9 AM and saw a whole flock in a small pasture...I stopped and counted 19 all in one place..

get you a slate call and learn the basics using one of those. dont call much. it def helps if you know where the roost is and get close before daylight (no guarantees) the only way to really figure them out is to screw up about 50 times

Get a crow call those help a lot. A box and slate are all you need for awhile. Mouth calls when you get more experienced.

I decided that I was gonna give it a try and bought a mouth call (the kind that goes completely inside of your mouth) a couple of weeks ago...I now believe that it is possible to gag to death...

You know some peeps in Kosciusko? My sister lives there with her husband.

Turkey season is just at a bad time of the year for me, and driving 4 hours to MS isn't very appealing especially with gas prices.

Thermacell, off, snake boots, pistol with rat shot is always handy, and most importantly find somebody to take you with you that is a turkey hunter. Most turkey hunters are happy to take hunters that are interested so we can hook you on our addiction. Taking somebody that knows what they are doing will save you a lot of wasted hunts.
