not quite sure it's that easy, if you're considered a "recruited" player you may be considered a counter against the 85 even if you're paying your own way. I've researched this in the past, don't remember the exact details. More than likely they wanted him to sign on signing day and show up in the summer.

I wonder if he could get a student loan and greyshirt. Not sure if he would be considered a full time student since he hasn't completed one semester of school yet, but if he is then the greyshirt is out the door.

The greyshirt rule postpones the start of a student’s NCAA division one or two eligibility. It is a great way to increase an athletes transfer opportunities.
A greyshirt is different from a redshirt in one major way. This rule only benefits students who have never attended full time. If a full time student or a second semester student drops down below 12 units they are not considered a greyshirt!
