The drawback of K is that you just throw any pitcher out there and by starting more guys you can just win the category.
On the other hand, K stats are more accessible (like while watching a game) and are well understood by everyone. K/9 is not complicated at all, but you never see their K/9 just watching a game. However, this is not a big deal at all.
K/9 prevents people from just throwing bums out there to try to win the K category. However, I feel that the ERA and WHIP categories prevent people from throwing Brian Matusz (sample ERA killer) just to accumulate strikeouts.
K/9 makes pitchers like Josh Johnson (or previously Rich Harden) even more valuable when they are healthy. These guys may only throw six innings, but they strikeout a ton of batters. For example, Sabathia may strikeout 8 guys in 9 IP, while Johnson fans 8 in 6 IP, so JJ would have a better K/9 than CC.
Both stats have their merits and potential drawbacks. Just a matter of personal preference. I felt like I would leave this one up to the league.
