You can keep spices in the freezer to prolong the shelf life. I don't buy spices at Sam's, normally, but crab boil and things like that for a crawfish boil are usually a good buy.
I've heard Costco is better than Sam's, but since we don't have one near me, Sam's it will be and when the Moms and the Pops start selling like Sam's, I'll shop in bulk there. I prefer to shop local, but it's not always the way to go. Sam's and Wally World both employ quite a few local folks, so I'm helping in my own way.

I had Sam's in NOLA and use Costco in SF, mainly because the nearest Sam's in 45 miles away. Costco does seem better and I like the fact that they have their own liquor which is made by big name companies. Bullit makes their bourbon, they have some great Anejo tequila, allegedly Grey Goose makes their vodka. Overall it just seems better organized and better customer service.

Yeah for crawfish/crab boils I do dump in cayenne from those big containers. I've also been known to use them as an excuse to go through the spice rack and dump in anything that has started to lose its scent. I figure the finer subtleties of flavor are lost in a boil anyway.
