Is It Wrong...

Is it wrong that outside of signing Brees I could care less about what the FO does on with the offense and that I'm much more concerned with what they do with the defense?
Seems like there's just a little too much panic around here about the Brees/Nicks/Colston and not enough concern about that awful front seven.

I'd say no, it's not wrong. A good O line is absolutely pivotal for ANY team, especially passing teams. Without that - Drew will be an expensive hospital bill waiting to happen.

Then you mean it is wrong. Right?

Argh, mis-read what you typed. Damn you, multi-tasking.
Yes, I mean it is wrong. Blah.

Just the nature of the beast. Today is about offense and yesterday was mostly about defense and naming Drew's kids.
Tomorrow take your pick it's the off season.
What is there really to talked about with defense. When free agency kicks off there will be plenty and then the draft.

Isn't it possible that they just plug in another guard that they pull out of their asses like everyone else on the o-line and turn him into a pro bowler? Not a starter on the o-line was selected higher than the 4th round. Imagine what they could get with a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

Sure - and maybe I'm just jaded after this past season watching the Falcons. However, they are a good example of displaying what a crappy Oline can do to your team (or not do).
Side note: Who's ankle (or Cankle now) is that in your sig pic? That looks devastating...

Problem is not losing Nicks, it's losing Nicks for nothing.

I have every bit of faith in the FO when it comes to plugging in peeps on the offense and it never missing a beat (mostly because Brees makes every one of those players better). Not so much on the defensive side though.

No matter how you want to spin it, when a young, top positional player walks free from your organization without receiving any compensation back... it sets you back. Temporarily tagging him and allowing him to seek a trade is a win scenario for everyone.

Chad hit the nail on the head.
If we sign Drew before the start of free agency, we then can franchise Nicks with the exclusive tag. This allows other teams to negociate with him, if he signs Saints have right to match or not. If they choose not to the Saints receive their first round pick for the year and the first for the next.
Imagine what they could do with a first for this year and the following.
That is why there has been alot of talk about the offense over the defense.

quote:Speculate all you want about the offense but there's nothing there to worry about. No matter what they do (aside from resigning Brees) they can't screw that up. It's been plug-in/play for 6 years now. Defense on the other hand needs an overhaul.

It has happened, but been a while. Even though a player is tagged with the non-exclusive tag he is still a free agent, he is not traded. It just means the said team has the right to match the other teams offer. If said team chooses not to match then they compensated for their lose.
Look the guy is young and considered by most to be the best guard in the NFL. He is very valuable to many teams out there. A 4 yr. starter that could have a career for another 10 yrs.
If you tag him what do you have to loose, but alot you could gain if he leaves verse just letting him walk. At worse you pay him the tag money or sign him long term.

How much less could you care?

Well except for the team that would have got him for no compensation.

At worse he goes the Vincent Jackson route and sits out like 10 games refusing to play for the tag.

True, but the same could be said about Drew or any other franchised player.
But do you really think any player the Saints franchise would go that route? The team is a true super bowl contender with a chance to play the in the super bowl in their house. Unlike the Chargers the Saints are the real deal not pretenders.

Right so it's still the worse case scenario.

Any player? I have no clue. Nicks probably won't go that route cause he is still living of a 5th rounder's salary and the franchise tag will still give him his largest paycheck yet.
