re: Schefter on Brees

I dunno, just saying paying a player more than any other player on your team or in the league at that position takes some frickin time. Especially with 2 other high value free agents that want to get paid as well. Bottom line is Brees will be here next year, regardless of how the contract situation works out. Hopefully we sign him and can tag Nicks or Colston but who knows what Loomis is planning to do. Maybe he is waiting on that guy from Wichita to drop the money from the bank off. For the first time, umm ever, i can trust the Saints FO bc they havent done anything stupid in a while. So I'm just waiting to see how things turn out and trusting Mickey to get whats best for our team done.

No bigger than the Tom Brady and Peyton deals of last couple years. This is not unmarked territory... maybe for Mickey and Benson but frick... they have known for 4 years that this day was coming.
Its been a few years since Brady and Manning set the benchmark for contracts. Protocol says Brees should set the new standard for top QB contracts so I'd say it is unmarked territory. Yes they have known this day was coming but I'm sure they weren't anticipating the amount of money they would need to shell out to keep 3 of the best players in the league.

You are talking about Peyton when we say Manning correct? That was less than a year ago... if we go to uncharted territory of more than 23 million a year... we might as well trade Drew now cause that deal isn't getting done.

This is my biggest problem with this whole scenario. Of course, it's difficult getting a deal done now that he's on the verge of becoming the biggest FA in history.
So, WHY WASN"T HE LOCKED UP LAST YEAR?????
Hell, as soon as the Super Bowl parade was over the front office should have locked him into a deal that would have guaranteed he would have retired a Saint. At that point he had already won a Super Bowl, taken us to 2 NFCCG in 4 years, and thrown for over 5,000 yards in a season.
What else did they need to know about the guy to lock him in to NO for the duration of his career? It's not like we made any big FA moves after that season anyway that would have made resigning and restructuring Brees less of a priority at the time. I know they were working on Pierre and Evans, but Brees should have been a much higher priority.
The front office did a great job making moves last year, especially given the lockout, but the previous offseason after the SB win was a complete waste.
They sat on their asses and now we're facing the consequences.
I still have hope that it can get done, but I am extremely frustrated by all of this.

Not worried, the deal will get done before Monday, and all of you worrying will look like drama queens.

If they couldn't figure out which players were coming up for FA at the same time as Brees than I have way too much confidence in this front office and have been giving them too much credit.

How the frick is it this hard to resign the best quarterback in the NFL? It's going to suck if we lose Colston and Nicks because we found it so hard to pay Drew Brees.

Until the FO gives me a reason to doubt them, I will risk looking like this. Man I hope come Tuesday I don't look like a stupid arse in Chad504boy's eyes.

It's not about doubting... its about front office has always shown us they don't over pay to keep players and if we aren't tagging nicks, we are losing valuability. That's it, valuability... its right there next to walkingOutthefrickingDooring.

so what will be said if we franchise brees and it leads to us keeping nicks?

Knowing and doing is totally different. We have a lot of talent that are free agents. I'm not surprised one bit that this is taking till the last minute.

How would franchising brees directly lead to a keeping of nicks. And if we are to keep nicks, it's best to do it before he hits open market. Saints aren't going to win a bidding war and Nicks will walk for the money.

I'm sure Kafka has a Spiderman meme that will express everything.

cap space and one less piece to worry about.
do you honestly think loomis is unaware of the importance of keeping these 2 players? hes just trying to solve the puzzle right now.
