I've stated my disdain for it before, decided to give it another chance. Still don't like it. Glacial pace, characters were not believable.

It's a free country. I thought it should have won the Oscar over Forrest Gump.

I understand your comments about the pace...but not being able to make a connection with the actors is extremely hard to understand. All of them or mainly just Dufresne? Because there are times I think Tim Robbins is a little "fakey" but not in this one.

They just didn't sell me on being hardened convicts, even Morgan Freeman, whom I like in just about everything else he's done. I should also admit here that I just don't like Stephen King's storytelling. He seems a decent guy and I'd probably like to have a beer with him. But I don't care for his style or the way it translates to the screen.

This wasn't fricking Oz. This was a prison back in the 40s. Of course these guys seem tame compared to what we see regarding prisons today.

A big part of Mark Carleton's LA history course at LSU was the Louisiana prison system. Things were much, much worse then than now. Granted, Shawshank is in Maine, but still..

My favorite movie of all time and one of the first movies I've ever purchased.

I understand that some movies aren't for everyone, but I still can't see how someone just flat out dislikes SR.

No, not really. Maine, I would imagine, is the polar opposite of Louisiana.
