He had the balls to chase him out of the diner and face him one on one though.
Come on, he's suppose to be a smart character. He should've known that it would be a lot safer to handle it in the diner where there are others who may have helped depending on the kid's reaction. Chasing him outside in the dark was the single most stupid decision he could've made in that situation.
It's these little things about this show that makes it seem really cheesy to me. Just seems unrealistic, even in a world where time travel(or cloning or fountain of youth) may be a real possibility.

so because he did something impulsive and stupid it's not realistic.
