It's really two different films. One is the story of private Pyle, the other of Joker.
I've always loved both parts equally. I don't get the hate for the second act.

Action deficit, shitty sets, big bad is a female Charlie (oooooh), John Wayne impression, Wooly Bully. I didn't exactly hate the second half, but it was tedious and annoying at times, and it didn't have a very good story to tell.
