It reflects a different attitude towards television. American shows tend to run as long as possible. British shows tend to run for one or two years and then have a definite endpoint. Think of the difference between the two Office's.

yep British shows usually concentrate on one or two main story arcs to carry about 12-16 30 min episodes and bring it to a nice close.

American shows hang on for dear life until people stop watching them or the cast gets tired of doing it
