Uhhh, yea. If you hit it where you're supposed to. Just like a .300 short mag will, if you hit it where you're supposed to.

My .30-30 has 5 notches in it and I've had it for 4 years. Only one of them went anywhere, and it didn't go far at all.

ETA: And there's a good chance what you found wasn't a piece of rib. Could have been leg...

134 yards - 10 point, 30-30. in full view he collapsed straight down without one kick... "dead as a doornail". waited up in my tree 20 minutes watching him the entire time.........at 20 min I saw his tail switch, 2 min later his ears, 5 min later he was standing straight up. Shot him again and got my trophy. Point being - if you can see the deer laid out, wait at least 20-25 min before getting down, if I would have gotten down when i "wanted to", I would have scared him and probably never found him.

My first deer ever was a 10 point. I was 16 yrs old and it was Christmas Eve.I will probably hunt the rest of my life and never kill another deer that compares to it. Killed it with a 30-30 Marlin at just short of 100 yards. Maybe it was luck, but I like to think that my father made me spend enough time shooting at targets to have made a well placed shot.
