Football rules that make no sense

1. Fumbling forward and out of the end zone is a touchback and the other team is awarded possession. WFT? Why such a big penalty to the offensive team? Shouldn't the offense just get it at the 1 yard line?
2. Kickoffs that go out of bounds result in the receiving team getting it on the 40, but no penalty for punts. Both are a change of possession through a kick, why the different treatment?
3. Defensive holding resulting in an automatic first down is ridiculous. In the SF/Pitt game the other day, one of the teams was facing like 3rd and 30 and the defense got called for a defensive hold 10 yards from the LOS..5 yard penalty and automatic first down? WTF?

4. The recovering team not being able to advance the ball forward on a muffed punt.

i disagree with your assessment

All of those rules make sense

I agree with you on number 1.
Number 2 is absolutely ridiculous and one of the worst arguments I've ever heard.
Number 3 I just disagree with.

where would you put the football? where the fumble occurred?
I really don't mind the rule, if you can't hold on to the ball around the end zone you don't deserve a TD. It would be unfair to award a person a TD if he fumbled the ball out of the end zone.
if you give a good alternate I could agree with you.

this rule makes perfect sense, all a kicker have to do is get good at kicking it out at the 1 yard line on each kickoff and it would change the game completely.

its a good rule IMO, what about personal fouls on a 3rd and 40 would that be just as bad.
there some things you as a player have to learn not to do, and holding a receiver on 3rd and long is of them

Those are all good rules.
One that never made sense to me is having to give a punt returner room to make a catch. If he doesn't call for a fair catch, there should be no halo.

why would this be a bad rule it makes perfect sense to me plus, its a yard or two

Agree. I also agree that there should be a penalty for punting out of bounds. I think DBS should be able to domwhatever they want to wrs until the ball is in the air

I've always been bothered by the CFB rule that you're down even thou no one's touched you. It drives me nuts when I see a diving Int but the player can't get back up and keep running.

the only rules I disagree with are some of the overprotection of the QB rules
now if its a blatant late hit on the QB call it.
but acedently hitting his head when blitzing him,
hitting him hard right after he throws a pass, along with other things. Its football people let them play.
they protect players to much IMO
many of the other rules make sense to me.

If a player is running for the pylon, and extends it and it slips from their grasp just before reaching it, and goes out of the endzone, it's a touchback. if it goes out before the pylon, it's spotted where it went out of bounds. seems like a huge penalty. I'm not saying that a TD should be given, but why should the team lose possession? If the other team recovers in play in the endzone, i'm good with a touchback.

I'm not saying there should be no penalty on kickoffs, but why is there no penalty for a punt? Presumably the kickoff rule is written so teams can't be pinned deep on a kickoff, but why is it okay to do that on a punt?

Personal fouls are pretty big offenses, defensive holding can be a slight grab of a jersey. I think it should be a spot foul and replay the down, but no automatic first down.

If a kick returner fields a kick with one foot out of bounds it's a penalty on the kicking team and ball starts at the 40.

a punt is a different part of the game
you could if you wanted too punt it near the end zone and put it by the one.
Plus there isn't much benefit kicking it out of bounds on a punt except near the end zone. How would you rule it anyway

ok fast receiver on a LB, LB grabs the receiver for a couple of seconds, which prevents him from burning the LB, and allows them to get a sack. With your rule change LBs would take a 3 or 4 yard penalty instead of letting the guy burn them for 50 or so yards, especially if it was a 3rd and long situation

The having to complete "the process of the catch" in the end zone so ridiculously.
Posted on 12/21/11 at 11:08 pm to Big L
If you fumble out of bounds, you get the ball back where you fumbled it..... unless it goes into the end zone. Just an odd rule.

Illegal man downfield? why when the ball is snapped they should be able to go where the wish. OL going down field should give advantage to the D, rushing the passer
