I am so screwed guys. My future father in law dropped a bomb on me in front of my fiance's entire family that he's taking me hunting. All her uncles, her brother, and of course her father love this stuff.

Now quick background:
I'm a former Marine but I grew up a surfer-boy in Florida. I know exactly jack shite about deer hunting.

I have some money to blow. I am very proficient with weapons, so what all do I need to buy? What all do I need to know. Please god help me!!

I had you pegged as a horrible bama poster but with this honest post I give pause.

I am assuming deer hunting?

Yeah deer hunting.

And to they guy that said I might not be coming back, if it was just her brother, maybe.

But her dad and uncles love me. Thank God.

Well, you're hunting deer so a decent rifle. Where are you hunting? Terrain? Some good boots and outerwear for starters.

I with the first response though. This is a hunting accident in the planning stages.

Pretty simple stuff. Good thermals, good insulated bibs and a jacket, hooded sweat shirt, neck gaiter, gloves, knife, flashlight, backpack, and a good rifle.

Oh, don't forget your orange. At least make come up with a good story!

If you don`t know jack shite about hunting then don`t try and act like you do. If they are taking you then they obviously give a shite about you. Surely between all of them they have a gun you can use to see if you even like it before spending a bunch of money. Ask them where you are going and what to expect as far as conditions go. Like I said I would`n recommend spending a lot of money to go on your first ever trip. I would recommend waterproof Jacket , bibs and boots. Remember to dress in layers if it is gonna be cold. Toe warmers are the shite for your boots when it is cold.

I guess I'm heading to Dick's tomorrow. Don't take that and run please. Thats just for the gear. A guy that owns a gun store not too far from me said he had a 270 brand new with a baked cherry wood frame. Scope. Supposed to be pretty sweet. Any thoughts on that?

I've already "scouted" the terrain. It's 250 acres of woods that were willed to her father. Only thick foliage on the south side. But overall not too bad to navigate. Tall pines. 2-3 small creeks that I saw, but didn't go that far back.

As far as boots and thermals, I still have all my military gear. Makes it a lot easier and cheaper.

I really wish I didn't have to go, but you should have seen my fiance's face light up when her father first brought it up. She really wants me to develop something mutual with her family.

I'm Alabama - they're Auburn
I'm a surfer - they hunt
I'm a white collar guy - blue collar (for the most part)

It's awkward sometimes.

.270 is plenty of gun. See if you can barrow one from them though. Use your military stuff or as much as you can. If this is going to be something you end up liking I would get some nicer Gortex stuff later. Don't forget to get your license too. Especially if you're in AL.

I already asked and they don't have an extra. Her father did at one time, but sold it. I'll get the license Monday. Does it only take 1 day? Someone told me about a hunter-safety course but that wouldn't apply to me because I was prior-service military. Truth?

I thought about bringing one of my own friends along. One that does this regularly. He hasn't returned my call yet.

That's the case in Louisiana. Check the web of the state your in. They will have everything posted you need to know.

Have fun. And congrats on marrying into a cool family.

No. They know I'm a surfer-boy. I've never lied to anyone about who I really am to try to impress. This idea came up when I brought them some lobsters and fish from the gulf. I love to spear fish and scuba. Her mother shares her feelings about wanting me and her dad to develop this common interest. But he won't go anywhere near an ocean. So I guess it's up to me to learn a new hobby.
