Caliber is the measure in inches of the bore diameter. For example, a .243 winchester has a 0.243" bore diameter.

Do you have any friends that hunt or anything? That's probably the first place I would go for information.

Assuming you're talking about deer hunting, you can get a mossberg 100atr in .270, 30-06, or .308 for $300 (scope included) and be set for life.

well i'm 21 just getting back into hunting, went with my pops when i was way younger but never really stuck with it. Went a few times this year with his .270 but when he starts back up he'll be using it so i'll need my own

Then get one like his. You'll have the same kind of ammo then. .270 is a great deer round.

But I'm with MyLSUHat about the Rem 700 30-06. Great rifle and the new triggers are amazing right out of the box. Plus there's a lot you can do to one to turn it into a true tack driver.

I too am a HUGE 270 win fan. Like down shift said, the number is the bore size. Most American rounds are in inches, but some are metric (7mm, 7mm-08, 6.5 creedmore). While the number usually denotes the bore size, the second number can mean other things. Take Hat's 30-06 for example, the 30 is simply 30 caliber while the 06 is the year the round was developed, 1906. THe 25-06 is simply a 25 caliber bullet in a 30-06 case that's been necked down.
If you're just starting, I would suggest to stick to the 30-06 family of cartridges. Those being the 30-06, 270 win, 25-06, etc......
The 308 is a 30 caliber bullet in a shortened 30-06 case that was developed to function better in automatic rifles and is a hugely popular deer round. The ballistics of the 308 really leave a LOT to be desired, but it's a tried and true round with LOADS of ammo and information out there. It's alway a great choice of deer rounds and can be had in short action rifles, which can prove to be really nice when hunting in a box stand and your shots are going to be less the 300 yds.

Again, I can't stress how much I like the 270 win. Love it.

Stick with the 270.s and 30-06. You can get a great rifle in the 500 dollar range and spend as much as you can on bases and the scope. That is really where you get your moneys worth.

ADL has a solid floor plate. In other words, there is no "trapdoor" or detachable mag. It must be unloaded on round at a time. The BDL has a hunged floor plate to allow unloading. The CDL has the detachable mag.

Yeah. That's the only thing I don't like about my xbolt. I do like the a-bolt's magazine with the hinged floor plate, though.
