"The primary purpose of the BCS is to match the two best teams."

Wrong again! The purpose of the BCS is to match #1 vs. #2 in a bowl game.

does anybody aside from LSU fans and OSU fans want to see LSU-OSU?

I'd bet more people want to see that than want to see LSU vs. Alabama again.

It would be a butt-kicking and OSU has zero national appeal.

We don't know that for sure, and the appeal of a high-powered offense vs. a monster defense, plus the "Miles Bowl" aspect, makes it at least as attractive as a rematch of a game everybody already saw a month ago.

Teams that i think would give LSU a better game (besides Bama): Stanford, Wisconsin, Oregon, USC, Oklahoma

Congratulations to you on having an opinion.

I would argue the goal is to find out who the #1 team is. Not to match 1 v 2. The whole point is to find the true champion who proved it on the field.

NO IT'S NOT!

The primary purpose of the BCS is to match the two HIGHEST RANKED teams, which are presumably the two MOST DESERVING

Who presumes that?

The purpose is to get #1 vs #2, how humans vote (whether on perception of who is better, or who is most deserving) is up to them.

Closer, but still not quite correct. The primary purpose of the BCS is to find out who the best team is. Matching the two highest ranked teams is just the means to that end. There are two assumptions underlying that, though. The first is that there is doubt as to which of the top two is the best. The second is that letting them play each other will erase that doubt when one of them wins. When they have already played, that doubt is, at least theoretically, erased, so there's no point in having them play again. So, the right choice would be to have two teams who haven't played each other already play each other to eliminate any doubt as to who the best team is.

All you need to know...per Wikipedia. Rece is an Alabama homer through and through. Should not be weighing in, and if anything, should recuse himself from the discussion!

Early life and career

Davis grew up in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and graduated in 1988 from the University of Alabama, earning bachelor of arts degrees in both Broadcast News and Public Affairs. While a student at Alabama, Davis regularly worked as a freelance television play-by-play announcer, studio host, and radio personality in select media outlets throughout the state, all positions that were primarily unpaid internships. In 1987, Davis began working as a general assignment reporter for WCFT-TV in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In 2001 Davis was named as an outstanding alumnus of the University of Alabama's School of Communication and Information Sciences.
[edit] Before ESPN

After graduating from Alabama, Davis served until 1993 in various positions at WRBL-TV in Columbus, Georgia. At the local news network, Davis worked as a sports reporter, the lead weekend news anchor, and later as WRBL's sports director.

In 1993, Davis left Georgia for the media market in Flint, Michigan. Davis began working as a sports anchor and reporter at WJRT-TV, a position where the young journalist would quickly garner the attention of ESPN.

Losing to Iowa St, giving up 27 pts and 450 yards a game isn't part of a good resume. They only reasons they will get votes over Bama is some anti rematch sentiment. No one really thinks they are better.

It's really strange to me why people aren't looking at this more. Almost every game OSU played this year was a shootout. Yes they won but come on there "resume" is not that much better than Bamas. Have they played more "top 25 teams", yes but please look at those teams. Do you really think those teams they beat would have the same record in the SEC. I don't.
I know people don't like stats but look at the margin of victory in Alabams wins and Okie States wins. Look at the amount of yards they gave up and how many points they gave up. Do you really think OSU is a better team??

The term best is subjective. The purpose is to make sure the #1 and #2 ranked teams can play each other and not end up in different bowls (like what would have happened last year to Oregon and Auburn). The two highest ranked teams.

Terms like best and deserving are what voters use to vote and fans use to argue.

The purpose is pretty simple, and that is to provide the #1 and #2 ranked teams the opportunity to play each other in a national championship game, while at the same time preserving the bowl system that has been a great tradition in college football for many years.

It's amazing to me that he doesn't even mention that the main reason Alabama is currently ranked higher in the human polls is because they started the season ranked much higher....

It depends on whether you are trying to figure out who the best team is or who the best conference champion is. Would you really put the Big East Champ into an 8 team playoff ahead of Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Stanford, Boise, UGA, Clemson or Michigan State?

First, the goal, whether the BCS or a playoff, is to determine a champion, not the best team. Hopefully the two coincide, but there is absolutely no guarantee that will result.

Second, in principle I don't have a problem with a rematch as long as the conference champion in the game, so this is not an argument about rematches.

Third, the number of playoff spots gives you more flexibility wrt to who can participate. The NCAA doesn't have the balance and schedule control that the NFL has, so to answer your question, it depends on how the playoff is set up. If there are autobids and the BE has one, then they get in. Bama would probably get in as an at-large.

If there aren't autobids and BCS rank determines who participates, then the BE probably doesn't make it. But I wouldn't just blindly take the top 8 teams. A team shouldn't get in unless it's champion gets in. You go down the list until you have 8 teams that fulfill that criteria. Do they get in if GA wins? Maybe not,a and maybe not LSU either if GA isn't ranked high enough.

Fourth, if there are only two teams, before there is a rematch, it should be absolutely clear that is the best choice. No one really knows who is best, but we know with absolute certainty that Bama lost to LSU. The benefit of the doubt should be given to the team that didn't, as long as the records are comparable.

Some people call him Lau-rece...cause he speaks of the pompatus of love (i.e. Bama).

He truly is king-kong homer/doucebag of the smarmiest variety.
