BCS Drama
By Rece Davis
ESPN.com
Drama could be in the offing during the BCS Selection Show (ESPN, 8:15 p.m. ET Sunday). We'll let you know exclusively who will play in the Allstate BCS National Championship Game.
Columnists, bloggers and people on Twitter have been exploding all week on both sides of the rematch issue. Is it ideal? No. But is it ideal for a team to be voted higher solely to avoid a rematch? The answer to that is also no.
The primary purpose of the BCS is to match the two best teams. If that happens to be LSU and Alabama, so be it. The fact that they're in the same division is an anomaly.
My primary criticism of the BCS in the early years was that the formula kept changing in response to a set of circumstances that were unlikely to be repeated. I believe that's what we have this season. If the formula is deemed to be as thorough as possible, it's the height of folly to try to adjust it so something "can't happen again."
If the BCS wanted to make the title game just for conference champions, that would be fraught with potential controversy, too. Would it be crazy to expect Georgia, Clemson and Oklahoma to win Saturday? Not really.
If a rule limiting the title game to conference champion were in place and those results happened Saturday, LSU would be eliminated from the discussion despite having a better record, playing a tougher schedule and beating Oregon decisively while the Ducks would probably go to the title game likely against Oklahoma. Why? Because Alabama, Oklahoma State, Stanford and Boise State would be eliminated too. Crazy? Not as crazy as Oklahoma State losing to Iowa State or Oklahoma face-planting against Texas Tech.
Strange things happen in college football. The dramatic impact of an upset is part of what draws us in. To some voters, a conference title will be important in determining which is the best team. My point is that no answer will satisfy everyone. But we'll give you the answer that will ultimately deliver the national champion complete with plenty of lively debate Sunday night. College Football Final will let you know what to expect Saturday night. See you then.
Hey Rece, never mind OSU's body of work and more wins vs top 25 opponents. Nevermind other rematches never get to happen in the past in the MNC game. Its bama so its automatically OK.
i hope OSU wins and still gets left out .....thereby exposing the BCS for the shite that it is and enabling LSU to beat the gumps again making it the GOAT.

I know the ESPN stumping for bama is just unreal.

And espn is carrying the nat'l champ game, so as we know ratings (bama over osu) dictates best game for espn, therefore.....

it goes beyond ratings.
Every week they are just hoping against hope LSU loses.
Its got to do with $abun IMO. When he quit the dolphins they got the exclusive interview....there were seals made right there IMO.
Now I think ESPN wants to do the crimson tide network.....like texas has. If that happens in the next 24 months....you can look back to now and see how all of this favoritism helped ESPN get the deal done.

NO IT'S NOT!
The primary purpose of the BCS is to match the two HIGHEST RANKED teams, which are presumably the two MOST DESERVING.
There have been many times over the course of BCS history where the "second best" team got left out... and rightly so. Who the hell knows who's second best, anyway?

No it's not. It's to find the 1 best team. And Alabama aint' it. Ok State might not be it but who knows?? THE POINT WAS TO DETERMINE IT ON THE FIELD.

Nov 5th was the game of the century......at their house....they had 2 weeks to get ready.....Billed as winner take all.....both teams knew what was at stake......

technically, UF-FSU wasn't the NC game. nor was it a 1 vs 2 matchup. carry on.

He is just drumming up ratings, and he isn't talking about LSU getting left out, no one in the media thinks LSU will lose. He is talking about a conspirarcy of voters banding together to knock Bama out. I would rather see LSU against another conference myself. I have already seen the Alabama effort at home when they felt it was an elimination game. They lost, had two chances to win, regulation time, and overtime. I don't see anything that knocks LSU out...so you boys go back to sleep. Don't get riled up about Saturday, it means nothing to you, but would be appreciated by little ol' us. We just puppies, let us play. Next year would be the time we should meet and play Big Boy Football.
Posted on 12/1/11 at 12:23 pm to Hot Carl
In all honesty, does anybody aside from LSU fans and OSU fans want to see LSU-OSU? It would be a butt-kicking and OSU has zero national appeal. Teams that i think would give LSU a better game (besides Bama): Stanford, Wisconsin, Oregon, USC, Oklahoma.
Posted on 12/1/11 at 12:23 pm to MoreOrLes
You'd better believe ESPN is praying OSU blows away OU so their BCS show can quadruple its ratings on Sunday.

Are some of our fans really this ignorant??? Bama is better than OSU, there are definite reasons people will vote for them. LSU will win regardless of who they play in the NCG. They beat Bama at home, will be no problem in the dome.
