What the outrage in this thread is REALLY about is that it's much riskier to avoid taxes using a business, so most people comply with it out of rational self-interest. This gives them free leave to pontificate from the supposed moral high ground over someone who is comfortable taking more risk than they are.

Actually for maids and baby sitters it's a little more complicated. See page 3 of LINK
For example, I happen to have a maid and over the course of the year I pay her about $1400. According to the above link, I do not have to withhold or pay anything at all. I have little doubt that she doesn't rush to pay tax herself but that is her responsibility under the law, not mine.
I do happen to know she is legal, so I'm clear there too.
Gambling - I actually do track this and this past year I lost $10. I didn't bother claiming the deduction.
So there.
