It appears that JJ was taking that big loop-and that Ford was also trailing him even deeper-because we were almost "reading" the defensive assignments, rendering Bama's attempt to play "assignment football" meaningless.
exactly because if you watch Faulk, he goes out on the outside backer as if to attempt a block at him, all the while he is getting out in position to turn back and seal off pursuit of the scraping linebacker, although he beautifully got the lineman at the same time. This was great coaching and preparation from huddle to whistle on this play.
ETA: Therefore, it could not be quick hitting, to give him time to get out there, while keeping the LB from getting too wide too soon.

Apparently the key difference is to overload one side and run to the weak side. It just so happened to be the short side.
Actually, it didn't "just so happen" to be the short side. If you line up strong to the short side, the defense has the sideline as an "extra defender", and so they don't have to unbalance as much to defend it as when you set weak side on the short side. So running weak side/short side gives you a better opportunity to overmatch.

hat play right there shows how fast he changed his running lane and accelerated to get to the end zone. Most RBs would have gotten 5-6 yards there at most.
He really made a nifty move to spring himself.

Lou HOltz turned out to be a genius. he called Jefferson and the option as being the key to LSU winning before the game. WE all laughed at him. The old man knows a thing or two

I wish they had called that play in the 4th Qtr when it was 3 and two, instead of calling two plays up the middle, then kick.

Who in their right mind would have predicted the short side option was the play that iced 8-0 Bama in OVERTIME? U just Cant make shite like this up

Did anyone else see Jefferson click the H back Clement in motion? And Celement signaled to him that he will stay put...wonder if the defense would have shifted with him if he would have gone in motion, and the result of the play be different?

thanks for finding that...perfect play, perfect call, perfect execution. that damn sideline jumped out and got us again. actually, it just delayed the inevitable....and the gumps had to suffer two more plays knowing that they were "toast."
