Because there are two spots in the bcs national championship game.
For arguments sake, lsu wins out in regular season and second championship game.
Stanford and Ok State lose.
At this point LSU is in the BCS NC game as the #1 team.
The question is who fills the #2 spot. At that point the comparison is between Alabama, Oregon, Oklahoma and Boise.
Conference/Division finish is not relevant because those four teams are not in the same conference or division.

I hear what you are getting at. I do.... I also understand the rationale. The only problem I see with your logic is this: if an Oregon team that lost to the Tigers on a 'neutral' (let's be real here) field in the 1st game of the season, wins out AND wins their conference championship (one MORE game than Bama will have played, mind you) I could definitely support the idea that they are more deserving. Not just because they won their conference, but because they (UO and Bama) each lost to a common opponent. Oregon would have beaten a top 5 opponent en route to winning their conference, and they would have had one more opporrunity for a loss on their schedule.
I honestly dislike the idea of rematching any former opponent, but an opponent from your OWN division within your own conference, whom you've already beaten at THEIR home, seems just a bit more egregious somehow... at least to me. But, oh well, right? I'll just continue to root for our Tigers to take care of business for five more games WHOEVER the opponent might be....
