Bear Bryant left Bobby Dodd hanging. The top SEC schools had a ridiculous number of players on scholarship and the SEC presidents decided to set an instant cap at 140 scholarships which would require scholarships to be taken away from players already on the rosters. Bobby was already pissed off at the SEC for other reasons and said he would not tell any of his players that he would take away a scholarship. Bear Bryant agreed to have his back at a time when what Bama says goes. During the meeting, Bear didn't show up and the Bama rep voted in favor of the cap. Dodd was pissed and decided that GT's best interest would be to leave the SEC. Bear Bryant had tried to get Dodd to rejoin but failed.
