like ramblin said, UH doesn't have a lot of support in Houston for some reason and Texas doesn't want them in.

There's no secret for Houston's lack of fan support. They have a large number of commuter students and a large number of older students who've gone back to school after years of working. There's nothing wrong with any of that, but you aren't going to have a big fan base in that situation.

Dabo when was the last time you went to a UH game? Obviously not anytime in the last 4-5 years.

Commuting is forced at UH because they only have dorms for about 20% of their Student Body, allthough they are building more as we speak.

As far as older students, that demographic is changing rapidly. But, one of my buddies went back to school and tailgated there every weekend with his wife and two kids, he was 36 when he graduated. Is he an exception? Maybe?

Just to add to this argument, SC played UH in the Liberty Bowl in 2006. Columbia and Houston are almost exactly the same distance to Memphis. SC sold out its side and had a lot of fans on Houston's side (including myself).. Houston literally gave away tickets to try and fill out their section because they couldn't sell enough.
