Let's talk about what you guys do in terms of getting your yards ready for the winter... What types of winterizing products do you use, when do you do it, does it actually work, etc......
Also, i was thinking of planting some ryegrass seeds to keep it green for the winter.. Any suggestions on what type of rye to plant???

What time of grass do you have?

Centipede......

I wouldn't do anything. Let it go dormant. You don't want to stimulate any new growth that might be hurt in a freeze.
Although planting rye makes your yard look very nice, it also retards the growth of your warm weather grass in the spring. Your centipede will be fighting the rye for nutrients in the spring.

my centipede looked like shite all year
probably because of the dry early summer, and i wasn't big into putting out the sprinklers, but even after the rainy periods, it never really greened up
i'd love to do something to it before winter to ensure a nicer spring
i typically weed and feed in the spring, but thats about my only maintenance

Thanks for the tips. I was looking forward to having a green lawn during the winter but not at the expense of it not looking good this spring.
I weed and feed during the spring. You guys suggest anything else in terms of spring maintenance?

The combination of the dry summer and only putting out fertilizer once is what made your grass look bad.

Honestly, there is very little you can do now. Hit is good in the spring with a fertilizer high in nitrogen and it should bounce back.

Honestly, I think a weed and feed is a waste of money this far south. As soon as the grass starts to come out its dormancy I hit it with fertilizer high in nitrogen and water it real good. Your lawn should be off to the races after that. Apply fertilizer every 6-8 weeks until its gets hyper hot in August.

What about keeping the weeds and ants away??

I've got St Augustine grass. Anything I should do to winterize it?
As for the Weed and Feed opinion, I use it every year in my front yard. Not in my back yard because I don't want to have to lock up my dog until it is watered in and dried. My front yard is probably 98% weed free with the exception being near the road. My back yard is about 4% weed free.

Feeding? Huh? I want mine to DIE DIE DIE. Mowing that crap every week from may to September gets really old.

Put a herbicide down if you have bad weeds. BUT, a healthy thick lawn will do more to prevent weeds than anything else.

No. You don't want to winterize a warm season lawn. At the least, you are simply wasting your money. At the worst, your lawn could be damaged if we get an early freeze.

just built a house, and sodded the lawn with
519 bermuda.
It has taken root, but i was thinking about doing a fall winterizing feed.
Thoughts?

Nice grass!
It is a warm season grass so I wouldn't do it. Not to mention, if you just laid the sod it has plenty of fertilizer on it from the sod farm.

Kill the bermuda. Outside of a golf course, it's a weed.

I use weed & feed on my st aug grass around the house in the spring. Nothing in winter. Spread rye on about an acre down by the creek to keep some green to look at in winter. Sometimes white clover for the deer.
