No one will answer the question of "What is the point - what is the purpose?"
I've asked this same question, though I've asked it in reverse. What is the point of a rule that does not speak to any issue in regards to leveling the field of play? Why have a rule that is, at it's heart, designed so that fans don't get offended?
Personally, I never cared for the Deion Sanders/Terrel Owens type bullshite...but you know what? I don't matter. My feelings of being offended ought not to be taken into consideration when officials throw flags that can affect outcomes of games played on the field. This is an in-house issue as far as I'm concerned where individual coaches and university administrators can doll out punishments if they disapprove of that type of behavior. It ought not be handed down from on high.
I asked earlier...do you have any problems knowing that players are constantly cursing at one another on the field and you can't hear it? What about the visible taunt is worse than calling a guy out face to face with little or no visible show? Should we penalize foul language?
