Pet Health Insurance?

Does anyone have health insurance on their pet? Considering getting it for my hunting dog for this season. Last year he hurt his foot and the vet bill was $500. Any experiences or advice?

Had insurance on a Goldfish named Lucky once.
Sadly they didn't pay off when he drowned.

I guess no one has ever used it before on here...

If you have a breed that is prone to health issues its probably worth it. What type of dog is it?

German shorthair pointer. they dont have health problems as far as the breed goes. i just am wondering if its worth the piece of mind for accidents

I would say not. Unless you plan on putting the dog in a high risk situation, you'll probably be ok. That being said, if you can afford the "peace of mind", buy the insurance. It really depends on the policy (cost, coverage, exclusions).

I cannot give any recommendation on the insurance, but the dog, if in the field, will get beat up and might need a vet. They are a hard running dog, comes with the territory.

my main motivation is because my other dog was hit by a car and we spent about 5k(less than 1/2 of true cost) on him to save him. that financial burden would not have been experienced with the insurance. also, shite can happen while duck hunting...

I've got my hunting dog covered with Embrace and I've found them extremely helpful. I've had no major claims as of yet but submissions are very easy. I did quite a bit of comparison shopping before deciding on Embrace and I would highly recommend the company. LINK /

Then you have your answer right there. If the investment in the dog is that substantial, it is worth it. Just make sure you get all the details of the coverage and exclusions from the provider. I suggest you ask your vet to review the policy before you purchase it, as i'm sure you will need a health exam for the dog prior to enrolling him/her. Your vet should be able to advise you as to what to look for regarding the terms of the policy. Like most insurance, the details can be surprising.
