Investing in silver coins

Who thinks this is a good idea? Do you see silver at least keeping up with the pace of gold? I'm thinking about purchasing lots of silver American Eagle dollar coins to use as an investment. I have tons of them from my childhood and forgot about them until I saw an ad from Littleton Coin Company for some of the exact same ones I have for nearly $200.00! I bought them when I was younger for around $20-$30 and when I saw this, it hit me that this might be a good idea.

Is there a certain place you buy them from off of ebay? How do you know they're real?

just have to find that established sellers ... Do some googling to figure out authenticity.... I picked some up when there was ebay promotions that would pop up where microsoft was offering cash back (up to 40%) on buy it now auctions... So I was getting them for well under spot (got some maples for about $12 each)

THF, when you first came to the board you didn't constantly post bullshite... you would come in, and if you had some knowledge on the subject you would post about it and it was often good, fresh information...if you remember, I voted you for best new poster or whatever it was...now it seems like all you do is post inflamatory, know-it-all put down post

I'm looking into hoarding nickels. They are currently worth about 20% more than face and the rumor is they will eventually be discontinued. I'm reading a book right now call Wooden Nickels, which I recommend to anyone interested in the history of the start and stop nature of coinage that leads to such things being a good investment.

I've never understood how this is any better than a certificate.

best way would be feedback history, but there are specifics AFTER you take possesion of the coins to determine authenticity

Nickels. 500 bucks of nickels is 10000 coins. Todays metal value would be 505.289
factor in copper and nickel going up and if nickels will be no longer made, you may make a few bucks

That's 110 lbs of nickels.

Yeah, the price has come down a lot recently. I know a guy who has several million in nickels. I can't remember what deal he worked out, but his storage costs are very low.

I used to have more time to research companies and trading strategies, so that gave me more to talk about.
Also, Rivers really ruined my attitude about this board. Half the posts on here now are about precious metals with every brokedick janitor talking about how he "knows" they will go up because of the inflations.
RSBR, KFizz, Lynx, and myself all took real jobs recently and it's really cut the quality of discussion here.

Yes. The play is to wait for them to discontinue the coins.

how long have people been waiting on them to do that with the penny? seems like an incredibily expensive investment against inflation.

The nickel guy I know has a very specific thesis about the nickel and it sounds pretty compelling when you hear it in detail. I'm reading Wooden Nickels to learn more about it on his suggestion.
But yeah, he is a $200+ millionaire, so putting $10M in nickels can just be a hobby for him if it takes a long time.
