Majority of West Virginia Fans we encountered in Morgantown....

were classless losers. I've been to every school in the SEC, and most several times and never experienced such an arrogant and clueless fan base. We went out Friday night to check out the bar scene in Morgantown and most fans we encountered had such witty comments as frick you...suck a dick......yall suck, etc.....It was kind of humorous seeing as those goofs were the underdogs, and haven't won a significant ball game in years. Needless to say after the game last night the fans were a bit more hospitable.

Sounds like an Oregon fan describing us

I can't stand West Virginia fans. Just because of Pat White they think they are relevant in college football.

I understand each fan base has their share of "those" guys, but it seemed like every where we went that's what we encountered.

That sounds shitty and all, but I wonder what kind of reaction a group of WV fans would have invoked in Tiger land the night before the game.

this was probably your first problem.
age of the people you encounter generally have an effect of your opinion of the fanbase as a whole.
go to tigerland vs an established tailgate on campus type scenario

Meh......Like I've said, I've gone out in Bama bars/Auburn bars/Tennessee bars/Florida bars and never seen fans act in such a way, and even when I was an obnoxious college student, never did I treat visiting fans like that, especially at times when LSU were decided underdogs.

I'm not particularly shocked, we obviously have issues but over all I've seen a lot of positive reviews so I just figured we were due for a bad one. Honestly in my experience away games is a crap shoot, I've gone to games and had a blast and had friends who were on the other side of the stadium who said it was miserable and the fans were a-holes. it's all kind of a time and place thing.

quote:What would you expect, given where you were??? I don't know if it's true in Morgantown, but a lot of times in other places on the planet, when people go to bars they drink alcohol, and when they drink alcohol, they might get a little drunk and rowdy. And when they get drunk and rowdy, sometimes they say stupid or hostile or at least unfunny things. Maybe cut 'em some slack?

they are used to seeing lsu fans. go out in say, norman, and youll get the same treatment you got in morgantown. doesnt say anything about the fanbase as a whole though.
if a wvu fan went out in florida they would be treated significantly worse than an lsu fan the night before a game

I think it likely depends on how you reveal your allegiance. Go out wearing a jersey like that one guy did the other night and gave a live updates about (a dude with a jersey blogging from the bar, how did he not get laid?!) and you're like a lightning rod. Casually talk to people and introduce yourself, people will be friendly. When people have conversations you become a person, they're not likely to be a dick. It's easy to be a dick to a faceless entity, and that's what just some guy walking down the street is to some.
Also in my experience it's also very dependent on the person. I've gone to away games and done the whole bar scene and seen my fellow Eer's act like a-holes and just attract negative attention, and then afterwards play up the victim card "They were so awful to us for no reason." And I've gone and interacted with the same people and been polite and respectful and not been mistreated. Some people are just oblivious to the wrong way they rub people.

its obviously person dependent, but i was making generalities based on the "average" fan since i had no real information on what the OP was really doing.
ETA: i think its also partially dependent on how big of a game it is for that town's program. that generally will have an effect on how amped up the locals are.

It's a "How dare you pull for your team on our turf" attitude.
Combine that fanbase with an ACC-described lack of academics, and you have a, "No thanks" from Slive.

Same experience except we had a 9 year old girl with us the whole time. We were told frick you at least 10 times and one guy told us to suck his fricking dick after the game. I can take it but they had no problem saying all that shite in front of a little girl.
As usual the old-timers were nice but way more trash there.
