Look at the last line of the paragraph
Still, anytime "College GameDay" arrives on campus, you know your game is a big deal. West Virginia fans have been waiting for this moment for years, and student ticket demand far exceeds tickets available. Fans already are putting up tents at the site and camping out. The city has even ordered couches off porches in anticipation of this game.
Boy they are really getting gussied up in Morgantown for the upcoming football competition
Thought this was great

I hear what you are saying .... but
I remember when I was around 12 or so and TAM was in its hay-day, 1961 or so. We drove to Texas for the game with Purple and Gold streamers on the car. Let them have these memories it makes for great fans down the road.

They aren't removing the couches to make the town look nicer or get gussied up, they are removing them so roving bands of Mountaineer fans don't steal the couches and burn them as is their tradition.
