Missouri Coach Don Faurot invented the split T offense which was the foundation of the wishbone and veer offenses which for a long time dominated college football.
In the 1960 under Dan Devine, Missouri went undefeated until losing in the final regular season game against KU. KU was forced to forfeit the game for using an ineligible player. The national champion back then was awarded prior to the bowl games. Minnesota at 9-1-1 was named national champion and ended up losing their bowl game. Missouri went on to win the Orange Bowl holding Navy's Heisman trophy winning RB to only 4 yards.
In the 1960s Missouri was the only program to not lose more than 3 games in a season and finished with the 6th best record in college football for the decade.
Dan Devine left in the early 1970s for the Green Bay Packers.
In the late 1970s, the University of Missouri hired the first woman chancellor. She wanted to make Mizzou a "public Ivy League" school and cut funding for athletics. This destroyed the football program and left the facilities to rot. From the early 1980s until the late 1990s, 2-3 wins a season were typical for Missouri.
Dan Devine returned in the late 1990s as athletic director. He led efforts to rebuild Mizzou's facilities and hired Larry Smith as coach who led Mizzou to two bowl games, including a win over West Virginia in the Holiday Bowl. Unknown to most Larry Smith was battling health issues so recruiting declined and he was replaced by Gary Pinkel.
Missouri has steadily improved under Pinkel. The university continues to invest in the athletic facilities. We now have $160 million in improvements just waiting on the sidelines in donor pockets which will become reality if Mizzou is in the SEC.
Included in future plans is stadium renovations expanding capacity to 81,000.
If Mizzou ends up in the SEC, the additional revenue will only further aid in improvements.
Even during our worst years we still averaged an attendance in the mid 50,000s. That is impressive do when a program averaged 3 wins a season over a period of nearly 20 years.

It was already mentioned by a reporter covering Mizzou, that the football coaching staff greatly prefers the SEC over the Big 10.
LSU fans probably remember Josh Henson. He left LSU to join Pinkel's staff here at Mizzou.
