Put them in the east and a&m in the west

Name some negatives about adding west virginia.. Im just not seeing them.

Eta: also, the sec needs to give up permanent opponents on the schedule.

I AGREE 10000000000%

This is a good program and will be again. It will bring the SEC all the way to PITTSBURG TV market

FSU and MIZZOU do NOTHING for the SEC that we don't already have.

i think a southern school would fit better. this no-no due to adding a "same state school" is a fabrication of the rumor mills on the internet. it was made. marketers can count. Florida State fans do not watch the Florida gators play football. adding fsu would bring in more new tv sets than adding west virginia. it's the name, not the location. i have to think clemson would bring in more than georgia tech because of their usual relevance and georgia tech has a very limited and apathetic fan base. i'm sure slive has paid for actual market studies that reflect reality. maybe i'm wrong about west virginia, of course, but i don't think they open up much of a market segment.

Given that Slive (and the SEC), at least for #14, doesn't want to poach a team from the ACC (for a bunch of good reasons), WVU makes the most sense:

*It's from the East, matching well with A&M from the West

*It's THE BIG DEAL in its state, matching well with almost all SEC schools

*Its fans travel well, often great distances, matching most SEC schools' fanbases

*Despite Civil War-era history, it's essentially Southern (to the nth degree if we're talking hillbilly Southern)

*Despite being essentially Southern, and not from a large TV market, its games on TV are well-watched in some big markets not currently served by the SEC's footprint, including Pittsburgh and DC, and many of its alums reside in those markets

*Despite the downturn after RichRod, its FB teams have generally been very competitive, without being dominant (not totally unlike A&M), and so it does not pose a giant competitive threat to SEC teams

*Its basketball program is very good, and would be a good addition to the SEC - and also a good rival for UK's Cats

*Speaking of the Cats, WVU's Mtneers would almost certainly become UK's fiercest rival, which would be good for all

*Finally, the Mississippi schools might enjoy having a new SEC school from a state that arguably is or would be abused more by SEC rivals than Mississippi

You are high. Pittsburg is a Big East and Big Ten town and WVA does not have a huge following in PA. It's like saying Ohio State adds the Detroit Market.

WVA does not give you DC either. DC is an ACC town with MD and UVA and then Big East hoops town and Big Ten with Penn State and first and foremost a Redskins town.

WVU only adds a decent football program and a good basketball program. They don't offer academics, population, or the facilities that are on par with SEC programs. I can't think of any other positives to adding WVU.

I would prefer Florida St., but I an intrigued at the idea of adding Virginia Tech too. I just think Florida St. fits in better than anyone else.

A&M is typically stronger and better than WVU overall. We need to bring in two teams with equal strengths in order to maintain balance.

FSU doesn't want to join the SEC.

Meanwhile, WVU would jump at the chance IMO.

West Virginia is poor academically and is in a small TV market. And not exactly a great recruiting area.

West Virginia doesn't bring enough to the table to justify splitting the pie into one more piece.

They have an average football team. Their state is poor and sparsely populated, bringing neither a substantial number of viewers or fertile recruiting grounds. They have poor academics. The limited number of fans they have are enthusiastic, I'll give them that.

Bottom line is that they would cost more than they would bring.

Of all the teams under serious discussion, they are possibly my last choice. A&M, FSU, VT, Clemson and even Missouri are better choices. Any of the ACC schools in NC is a better choice. Not adding anyone is a better choice.

Pittsburgh? Seriously? West Virginia football is not even on the radar in that city. Pitt, Penn St, Notre Dame, and the Steelers will always dominate that city's fall tv market.

WVU being THE school of the state is a big deal... I think they belong in the sec more than Missouri or god forbid clemson

Agreed, If we had to choose one of the 3, then I'd go with WVU over the other 2, but my opinion is that none of the 3 should be invited.
