With the new movie coming out about moneyball, who here is a loyal subscriber to moneyball?

Also who will go see the movie?

My personal opinion is that moneyball wins penants but not world series.

I will go see the movie at least it is an original idea from Hollywood.

So "Moneyball", in your opinion, can get you to the World Series, but can't get you to win it?

If a team, using the "Moneyball" strategy, can get to the World Series, you think they'd have a chance to win it

ETA: Not original by Hollywood by any means. The previews looked terrible and doesn't look like it will do the book justice.

Ehhhhhhhhhh. It's not so much about the moneyball, as it was the Sabermetric evolution of the entire sport. The Red Sox and Yankees both personify this approach, though as of late it doesn't look too well . On-Base Percentage was always, ALWAYS overlooked in the past, and GMs finally started giving it credence around the time Billy Beane was Moneyballin it up. The problem with the actual book; however, is the players he really wanted (Youkillis, ect.) still wanted a lot of money. That pudgy kid who was the trademark of the book never really amounted to anything. He got really, really lucky on a couple of pitchers and looked pretty smart grabbing Nick Swisher.

Sorry it is late I wasn't very clear. It is a good strategy for the regular season but not the playoffs.

All teams nowadays use some sort of "Moneyball" strategy

Billy Beane's act is getting old in Oakland

The entire strategy is taking advantage of perceived value in the overvalue of certain traits and undervalue of others. You saw it with On-Base in the mid 00s, and just a couple years ago, defense was incredibly undervalued, so the smarter teams scooped up great defenders. It's an ever flowing cycle, not just one set of ideas.

Kieth Law wrote a very scathing review of the film last night. I am still going to go see it. Not seeing how the book translates into a film.

He's an absolute terror to trade with. The man understands value like no other in the league.

I see it as being Beane being the zany new guy, the old guard not budging from their beliefs, he keeps plugging away, tough times happen, the little girl professes her faith in him, things turn around, the old guard realizes they might be wrong, and a happy ending. Plenty of cheap punchlines, at least two sombering father daughter moments, and plenty of actors terribly acting at playing baseball.

Exactly what I see it as, and exactly why I won't pay to see it

Won't do the book anywhere near justice, imo

To be honest, time didn't do the book justice. When it first came out, he looked like a visionary... then you find out that GMs like Cashman and Epstein had been following the same line of reasoning since they were hired, and he never won a title until the rest of MLB caught up to him, which looks kinda bad because the Marlins won it with cheap arse payrolls.

I'll be seeing it just to see how well the book translates into a movie.

Yep. Exactly. The Extra 2%, the book about the Rays turnaround, hits on that bigtime.

I never got this way of thinking. Just because it won't be as good as the book, means it won't be good at all? I'm not trying to flame. I just don't read to many books for pleasure. But if the book is good, wouldn't it make you want to see the movie even more?
