Either the conference plays 13 games or one will have be dropped.

the west teams will drop an OOC game.

Exactly

Yeah, it poses problems. I think 14 is already lined up, personally, but for the sake of discussion, let's say we spend a year with 13 teams.
I think they nix the division scheduling while keeping the divisions and have everyone play 9 or 10 games at random, while preserving streaks and rivalries as much as possible.

Sweet, thanks for figuring that out.
Now how do you propose they deal with inter-division games, which is the real problem? Who is A&M going to play and how is that going to happen while making sure everyone plays the same number of conference games with no re-matches?

Yall keep that game in Dallas. Move LSU v Ark back to Fayetnam.

if LSU loses Florida, Auburn or Alabama on a yearly basis i'm going to be fricking livid.

easy as shite, just drop "Towson" we never should have scheduled them anyhow.

Will conference pay cancellation fees?

This is what many people getting excited over 16 team conferences simply aren't thinking about. You can get to 14 teams without hardly any interruption of the current format if you simply add A&M to the West and 1 team to the East (Va Tech OR NC State OR UNC, etc). 14 is about as big as you can go and still make the current divisional format work. Anything beyond 14 and the schedule becomes an absolute clusterfrick.
What scares me is people don't seem to be making the distinction that 14 team conferences can be "super conferences". In fact, I think you can make an even better national playoff with FIVE 14 team super conferences as opposed to FOUR 16 team conferences. Everyone seems hellbent on getting to 16 and to heck with the consequences to everyone's schedule.
I've got what I think is a pretty cool idea for a 10 team national playoff that would work with FIVE 14 team conferences. #1 through #6 playoff seeds get a bye while #7 plays #10 and #8 plays #9. These two games are "play in games" played on the home field of the higher seeded team. The two winners become the #7 and #8 seeds in an 8 team playoff played in the BCS bowls. All seeds are seeded based on final BCS ranking. The 10 teams come from the 5 conference champions as well as the 5 highest ranked at large teams regardless of conference based on BCS ranking. The play in games are played the weekend after the conference title games and the 8 team playoff is incorporated into the BCS games to be played over 2 consecutive days (either Dec 31 and Jan 1 or Jan 1 and Jan 2). The 4 BCS winners play the next Friday or Saturday (as not to intefere with the NFL) after the BCS games and finally the national title game is played a week after that. The season is only extended for 4 teams each year. Sounds pretty good doesn't it?

We wont play the same number of conference games.
West will play 9, and the east will play 8. IT wont really matter because its all about getting to atlanta. The east will hae no competitive advantage over the west teams because they are not competing with west teams to get to atlant. pretty simple.

What you dont seem to get is the addition of one team to each division will either eliminate one inter-division game per year or will necessitate going to a 9 game schedule. You're either losing the ability to play every team in the other division twice per decade or you're playing only 4 home conference home games and 5 away games every other year, leaving room for only 3 OOC games, all of which must be home during your 4-home years to reach 7 home games and viability.

Okay, so how are 7 west teams each going to play 3 inter-division games (21) while the 6 east teams also play 3 games (18)? Those numbers have to be equal.

Sorry, I missed this on the first read... This is beyond idiotic. A&M will play 6 conference games, while the rest of the west plays 9 and the east plays 8? Are they ineligible for the SEC championship?

Seriously, email Mark Cuban ... he's got some sort of project for a Nat'l College Football playoff going.

I think the days of permenant foes (uf vs lsu, ole miss vs vandy) are close to an end.... I hope that if we stop at 14 then we just drop an ooc and keep everything going like normal:
BESIDES keeping cross divisional permenants. Need to go to just a rotating 3 teams.
Then if they go to 16 as I have said before need to break each division into a division and have 4 4 team divisions that are still divided into East and West, like West 1 West 2 East 1 and East 2 (with actual names of course) then a team plays the three in their division then two from each other division. Then in the end you have the Sec champ game from an east and west team like normal....
I think that's the ultimate setup personally. Before I through out teams like for the divisions could be:
West 1:
Auburn
Bama
Ole miss
State
West 2:
Tamu
Missouri
Lsu
Arky
East1:
Florida
Uga
Fsu (just to show example)
Kentucky
East 2:
Usc
Clemson(just for example)
Vandy
Tenn
I think this setup is perfect yeah you lose auburn vs uga every year, and uf vs lsu, and bama vs tenn.... But I think that's gonna be lost eventually either way

You would lose a non-conference and therefore a likely home game but you'd make it up with an extra division game. For example, Alabama has 3 SEC West home games in even # years and 2 SEC West home games in odd # years. That is balanced each year by having either 2 or 1 (depending on the year) cross division home games.
This year Alabama has 4 SEC home games and 3 non-conference home games for 7 total. With a 14 team league, each school keeps 3 cross division games like now. The only difference is that it takes a little longer to get all the cross division teams on your schedule. Each SEC likely loses a non-conference home game but they pick up an extra home SEC division game as long as you figure out how to give each SEC team the extra division home game in years they only have 1 cross division home game to balance things out. If that can be done, then the # of home games will remain roughly the same.
P.S. I'm talking about a 14 team league with 1 team added to the West and 1 to the East and not the unique temporary situation of 13 teams in 2012. Sorry for not clarifying.

I think the permanent inter-division rivals are done. This means LSU v. Florida is over. It is going to be impossible to keep all of the good yearly match-ups with a 14 team conference. Hypothetically, say LSU was put in a division with Bama, Auby, Fla, OM, Arky, and TxAgs? Then Fla misses Ga, OM missis Ms St., etc. With all of the traditional rivalries that exist in the SEC, someone is going to get shafted no matter what scenario you come up with. I don't look for the SEC to add an extra conference game to the schedule. So eventually it will be 6 division games plus 2 rotating inter-division games.
