Anyone here follow Formula 1?

It is hard to find folks that actually follow the sport. I am wondering how much that will change when the Austin F1 course is up and running next year.

I've tried to, but ALMS, Rolex Cup, etc. are a lot more entertaining to me.

Rolex is cool. I find that most people that follow f1 and touring cars don't really care for NASCAR all that much.

I only watch NASCAR on road courses, and that's only to watch them all crash at the first right turn.

As a kid I would record NASCAR road events, and just fast-forward until they crashed, and watch it a million times, then fast-forward to the next crash. I didn't give a shite about the race or any non-road courses. I just wanted to see things collide.

Ayrton Senna, Nikki Lauda, and Michael Schumacher were devastating. I would have liked to seen a young Paul Tracy race F1.

I was a big Senna fan. He was the best driver to ever get behind the wheel, just an incredible sense for where the limit of the car was and taking it there. I like to follow Hamilton now. I love aggressive drivers.
I am going to try to make the trip to Austin. I think they were trying to move the race date so I have some time to make up my mind.

What I want to know about Formula 1 is this:
Where is the money made?
Cars cost 10-15 MILLION each.
The largest consumer market on earth...the U.S....pays F1 absolutely NO mind.
When I watch on TV, there aren't 100's of thousands in attendance.
Yet, sponsors pay all this money on cars, at tracks, on TV, etc. etc.
WHO "consumes" F1 to the point that it made Michael Schumacher a BILLIONAIRE? I can't imagine that people in Europe are glued to their TVs watching races the same way they watch soccer/cricket/rugby etc.
I'm not knocking F1 by any means. I just want to know where the money is generated.

I don't know exactly how the finances of the teams works but I do know that there are an estimated 300,000,000 F1 fans world wide. Very few sports have that type of advertising impact. Especially if you quantify that by thinking about that as the entirety of the United States amounts to that same number.
I also believe that the company's get huge tax breaks in Europe for sponsoring teams. So big tax breaks and large following amounts to huge investments by sponsors

Paul Tracy would have gotten his arse whipped!!!! He couldnt have hanged with Senna, then Schumacher, cause that's the time frame your referring too. mansell came to Indycar and won the title, over Tracy in a Penske.
I follow F1 like a religion. Very happy to see Bruno Senna qualify 7th today. I've watches every race since 1984, and seen many more before.
