OU wants to maintain its rivalry and annual game with Texas so it can keep its toehold in Texas recruiting. If that gets cut off they are in serious trouble.

A&M, meanwhile, has (finally) figured out that, so long as it stays in the shadow of Texas, it will never be more than the second-best program in the state (plus having to deal with OU doesn't help matters). It has to find a way to differentiate itself from Texas to potential recruits, so its solution is to offer them the chance to play in the best football conference, the SEC.

Will it work out for them? That's hard to say. But the current scheme isn't working, and remember the classic definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, hoping for different results each time.
