It makes a lot of sense when you think about it. They have fallen off a bit since 1996 or so when they missed the Big 12 train, but they have excellent athletics facilities in many sports (their natatorium is legit), they have a student body of almost 40,000, they are in one of the nation's largest media markets, and their football team could be capable of good things if they got more prestige/revenue.

Educationally, they are as good or better than most SEC teams, and it wouldn't be expanding the size of the conference geographically at all (assuming A&M came in)

They are raising money to expand their stadium...to 42,000 seats.

I'd rather have Rice. It would be a perfect match with Vandy (great academics -- Rice is also an AAU member), neither team does squat in football, and their "Marching Owl Band" (which is really more of a comedy troupe) would provide hilarious halftime shows.

U of H has crappy facilities, Their stadium is crap ; people in Houston refer to U of H as Cougar High. Rice would be a better fit, but neither school brings that much to the table.

it makes no sense.. they dont command the Houston market at all..

Texas, TAMU, LSU and Rice all pull bigger shares of the Houston market..

Their facilities aren't crappy. Their stadium isn't great, but they've just cleared the money to knock it down and build a new one.

It's making the transition from commuter school to a more traditional one. They could easily have a decent football program in a matter of a few years; they are already better than Kentucky and Vandy.

No disagreement. I don't want UH in either, and all Rice would provide is an easy W for everyone not named Vandy. Though if Rice were a member, Vandy wouldn't feel all alone as the SEC's only private school and its worst football team.

Yeah I remember some of their fans/students saying "how huge" the Liberty Bowl was in Memphis.. it fits 60,000.

What's with this misconception? Rice has fewer than 6,000 students (undergrad and graduate), and hasn't done crap in the big-draw sports in ages. Nobody cares about Rice athletics in Houston except for the few who attend the baseball games. At least UH sold out each of its football games last season.

That being said, UH sure as hell ain't SEC material.
