Spoke with Jamie this week at a function and I always thought his deciding to return for his Sr. year in 1995 instead of pitching for the Braves was the most important move in the revival of LSU football- even bigger than K. Faulk's signing.
Dude, you were born in 1993.
I was a student at LSU in 1995 and I can assure you that Kevin Faulk's signing was a huge deal. Also, LSU finally made inroads in NOLA and landed a QB by the name of Herb Tyler. Tyler took over for an injured Howard late in the 95 season and went on to win 26 of the next 31 games he started.
I'm not going to knock Jamie but it's the height of insanity to say Jamie Howard staying on in 1995 was the "most important move" in reviving our program in 1995.
The biggest move in 1995 was hiring DiNardo in December 1994. He instantly got people pumped up with his "Bring Back The Magic" campaign, signed some big recruits like Tyler, Faulk and McFarland. And early in that season, we scored a HUGE (at the time) win over Auburn at home that got the fans really believing that we were about to turn the corner. At the time, LSU's season turned heavily on the Auburn game -- something that people who suffered during Curley's regime remember all too well.
I'm glad Jamie got to beat Auburn that year. He deserved a chance to redeem himself. But let's not go crowning him the savior of LSU in 1995. He wasn't. DiNardo deserves most of the credit.
