I did not comment on that portion of the OP's opinion. That is, and will remain, his opinion, not mine.
I take the position that Faulk's decision to attend LSU was THE turning point from the Hallman years to the program we have now. In a similar fashion, Gerry Dinardo should get more credit than he is typically accorded for restoring LSU to national prominence.

I give Jamie Howard some credit for being on the team that "brought back the magic". His redemtion win vs Auburn is what I remember him for.
I blame the interception game on Curley. Should not have even thought about throwing the ball.

GN dropped the ball at the end of his LSU coaching career for whatever the reason, but when some seek to lump him in with CH I have to wonder what LSU football program they have been following.
And Faulk's decision to go to LSU, with things the way they were for LSU, should be a Louisiana holiday.
