Leaving Current Company for Another

Any recommendations on what to say when leaving one company for another?
I'm leaving my current engineering firm that does a lot of public work for one that does more private work (and pays more, but more unstable).
Is it ok to just tell current employer that it's strictly a financial decision (when that's not completely true. I like the work better at future employer)? It would not be hard to leave it at "strictly a financial decision" since I'm getting ready to pay for an MBA.
Is there anything else I should say to them to keep doors open considering there's a decent chance that I could get laid off and come crawling back? I've already left current firm for future firm once, got laid off and had to come back.
Edit: My current employer does not have much work coming in and has already had a string of layoffs. Things are not looking great for job security where I'm at now, so there's a chance that if I stayed where I am that I could get laid off here anyway.

I think you're crazy if you have already did it once to get laid off. This is not an easy job market right now. Don't be surprised if they don't take you back the next time no matter what excuse you use.

the employer won't pay for it?

I would think you leave once and you can go back, but doing it twice would shut the door, unless they get in a bind for somebody. I wouldn't hire you back a second time.

I realize it sounds ridiculous that it's already happened once before, so I'll clear something up.
Private work is on the rise and my current employer does not have much work coming in and has already had a string of layoffs. Things are not looking great for job security where I'm at now, so there's a chance that if I stayed where I am that I could get laid off here.

Current employer, not a chance.
Future employer, possibly some help, but I doubt they would pay for the whole thing.

Holy shite dude. They'd be insane to take you back.
Well, frame it like you were concerned about being laid off and had to go with a stable job or some such bullshite.

That's for real, not bullshite.

Well you contradicted yourself in the OP.
Just go with it then. I sure as hell wouldn't give you a third chance but who knows?
