Can the NHL take advantage of the NBA Lockout and start making serious headway?

The following tweet from Bill Simmons intrigued me:

"The NBA is crazy for opening the door for the NHL like this. That league was coming on, anyway - now it could have a legit breakout season."

Say for example that the NBA locksout for the entire 11-12 season. How much can the NHL take advantage of the vacuum left by the Association, particularly come playoff time when the NHL already thrives considerably?

And will the lack of a good TV Deal hinder any real chance the League has of gaining ground on the NBA in the Sports Hierarchy of America?

Only if the networks hosed by the NBA Lockout show hockey to fill programming.

I'd rather watch a hockey game than an NBA game any day

NBC/Comcast makes a legit 360 on Versus and makes it into a competitor with ESPN.

The hockey playoffs are awesome. I'd rather watch a regular season NBA game over a regular season NHL game though, in most cases.

Yep. Though, whether people like simmons or not this is good PR for NHL.( IE puts pressure on espn to talk NHL) They just had their highest finals in twelve years.

I heard rumors of espn trying to buy puck daddy blog aka the best hockey source.(Nooooooo! )

does not help at all. Sadly ESHIT is a monopoly and will continue to be one for the foreseeable future

NHL okay'ed way back when in 2004 to espn for them to stream TSN feeds.(and still be with NBC/OLN now Versus..) ESPN said no even though they own a share of TSN in Canada. bettman feels butthurt..

I'd rather watch a regular season nhl game between the oilers and the islanders over the NBA finals any day.
