Live music in restaurants

I have never understood the appeal for this.
We met some friends last night at a local mexican chain. As we walked in, my son said "ugh, if I had known they had this music I would not have come."
I agreed with him. Who wants to hear some guy with a guitar playing old Jimmy Buffet and Eagles while we scream at each other during dinner? It's not like the guy is going anywhere musically. It's just crap. And I'm not picking on the guy. He likes playing music, so good for him he can get a gig.
Fortunately it was a cool evening and we were able to sit outside and not be subjected to that.
What do others think?

i always expect mexican restaurants to be loud but a band is a little over the top

Agreed. The restaurant shoud spend that money elsewhere.

The Mariachis annoy the hell out of me, but at least I can understand them being there.

Live music in the dining room is bad.
Live music in the bar area is okay, but it should normally be a man and his guitar or piano. No need for a four piece in a restaurant.

I like mariachis as long as they aren't blaring loud like on that Ben Stiller movie. A random dude with a guitar? No thanks.

I actually agree.
As I've mentioned on here before, Chelsea's is one of the best casual restaurants in BR, but they turn into a bar with live music at night. And that's great.. but I've been in there 3 times now at dinnertime and had the band practicing and setting up during my dinner.
And let me tell you.. it's not some smooth jazz band or something; it's full out rock complete with screaming at times. It's very annoying to have going on during dinner.
I enjoy piano players though. Monjuni's has someone playing the piano on Sundays.

I can handle live, even loud, music if it is good. Most of these guys are just a dude and a guitar playing old songs.

and I was born down there.
Music at a place is not the end of the world. if they aren't at your table leaning over you as you eat, either stay and eat or shut the frick up and leave.

years ago at the ole P.O.E.T.S in BR where I did work in the kitchen(my night off) I went to see my sister play, and went with two younger sisters. They could turn up the volume after the kitchen closed. Chicks that wear halter tops and wait tables should always check for wardrobe malfunctions. It is too hard to tell a girl "nice tits" and keep a straight face.

Normally I think this is terrible, but I think it's contingent upon the quality of the music in question.
I remember one night at this little rib joint in Atlanta they had a blues band; the music was good and actually contributed to the atmosphere. It's all relative, I guess.

Friend of mine had a restaurant that a mariachi band would play at every Saturday night. For the most part, it made for a great experience.
The bar are used to be packed with Mexicans, they ate that shite up. Wasn't uncommon for the bar to be kept open two hours after closing with the band still playing, as long as people were buying drinks and tipping the mariachi.

what time was dinner? they don't start setting up/soundchecking till 10pm

Rarely, and I mean rarely, does it enhance the dining experience. On a couple of occasions I can remember, it's been fine, but that's about it.
I loathe an Italian place where some 3rd rate "opera singer" wanders through.
