8th Circuit Court Ruling: FA Could Start Soon

8th Circuit ruled NFL cannot lockout players not under contract -- i.e. rookies, free agents -- because there is no employment relationship.

Ruling does not allow unsigned players to start signing asap -- it kicks back to Judge Nelson for a hearing, though, she'd greenlight it.
So it looks like even if we dont have a new agreement soon then free agency will start soon anyway.

How would that work? Would they use the old CBA free agency rules?

Not sure. I just think its another reason why we will have a new CBA soon. This is kinda forcing their hand to get it done.

If anything it forces the hand of the players. This means the owners can pretty much give the players the
for as long as they want.

Not really. Despite what it sounds like, this is almost a non-issue. Think about it. No Free Agent/rookie is locked out and are free to sign. Well, once they sign, they are now subject to the lockout. This changes nothing, except gets guys in that wouldn't normally be.
Also, who is a free agent? There are only a handful of guys we know will be for sure, or were before the lockout. If they are a 4th year guy, they aren't, technically, a free agent. The new CBA could allow for it, but it really changes nothing.

The owners have now been told your lockout is totally legal you can have it last as long as you want. The judge did not say free agency is open all he did was kick it back down to the lower court it is up to her to decide and chances are just like when the lock was declared illegal for a few days. The owners didn't do anything with free agency.

Why are you such a negative a-hole? Go turn on ESPN or NFL Network its not exactly the way you are thinking it is.

But by the rules that existed under the old arrangement, the Saints would have a whopping 28 players as unrestricted free agents. Those with six or more years in the league are running backs Ladell Betts and Julius Jones, fullback Heath Evans, center Jonathan Goodwin, safeties Darren Sharper, Pierson Prioleau and Matt Giordano, linebacker Scott Shanle, Kawika Mitchell and Danny Clark; defensive linemen Anthony Hargrove and Jimmy Wilkerson and long snapper Jason Kyle.
The following players have five years experience: safety Roman Harper, cornerback Leigh Torrence, wide receiver Lance Moore, wide receiver/kickoff returner Courtney Roby, tight end David Thomas and offensive tackle Zach Strief.
Also, all those folks we drafted can now be signed.
I'm not saying there will be a flurry of FA signings, but only because I think a new CBA will be in place before Judge Nelson can hear the issue.
The longer the lockout is in place, the bigger this ruling will become.

Good post. I didn't realize all those guys were unrestricted. Honestly, some of the 6yr guys won't be back at all.

You are acting like people are going to start signing free agents tomorrow. Other than helping the owners the ruling really doesn't do much. I want football back just as much as you do I am just being a realistic a-hole.

Did you read Farvas post or go to the link? a-hole!

By the way I was referring to myself as a realistic a-hole but thanks for putting it in bold in your last post really got your point across.
I still believe that there will be no free agent or draft pick signings any time soon. Also how does an article telling people how many free agents the Saints have affect whether or not people will start signing them.

Agree completely.

His tweets from 7 hours ago didn't really state anything new. If the free agents want to try and make a case that they can be signed they will have to have an hearing and then wait for a ruling. No owner is going to sign anyone without a new CBA in place.

We will have a new CBA by next week anyway so it doesnt matter.
You are always a negative a-hole though.

I completely agree with you that there will be a new CBA sometime next week. I actually have Wednesday in a pool at work.
Being realistic about when free agency will start is not being negative. I am not denying that I am an a-hole.
