They aren't, if you're a fan of the books. Most of the movies leave out major scenes and events in the books or add things in. They may be good movies but the fact that they stray from the books makes them bad for me. I loved the first 2 movies as movies, but I appreciated the 7th movie as a movie and good representation of the book.

I loved the books and the movies. And I also think it is unfair to compare the two, because they are two entirely separate forms of media. To include everything from the books is just an impossibility.
